The Turtles - Carlos Santana (Dedicated to Mom)

Turtles drummer John Barbata also drummed for
Jefferson Starship, which starting in the late 1970s would feature lead vocalist Mickey Thomas formerly of
The Elvin Bishop Group. Part of that group was the multi-instrumentalist Dennis Marcellino who was in the funk group Rubicon, the Tokens (famous for their hit single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") as well as
Sly & the Family Stone, whose lineup featured Larry Graham (credited as inventor of the "slap-bass" technique) and Gregg Errico who had played drums in David Bowie's and Jerry Garcia's bands. Graham and Errico would go on to form
Azteca (a.k.a. Graham Central Station) with guitarist Neal Schon, who before he went on to form the successful band Journey, had played in
Santana with Carlos Santana.

Janis Joplin - Night Ranger

0) Janis Joplin was in Big Brother & the Holding Company with
1) Nick Gravenites who was in The Electric Flag with
2) Mike Bloomfield. Bloomfield grouped up with Al Kooper and Stephen Stills to record a live album they titled Super Sessions in 1968.
3) Stephen Stills and Neil Young formed the Stills-Young Band in 75-76 which featured drummer/keyboardist
4) Joe Vitale formerly of Amboy Dukes with
5) Ted Nugent who put together Damn Yankees, a super group featuring himself, Tommy Shaw of Styx and
6) Jack Blades of Night Ranger.

Dire Straits - Van Morrison

To celebrate St. Paddy's Day we connected Dire Straits to my favorite Irishman, Van Morrison!

0) Dire Straits drummer Pick Withers had previously been a member of the English folk band
1) Magna Carta which featured Doug Morter, Paul Burgess and George Norris who would all eventually join
2) The Albion Band whose founding members Ashley Hutchings and Richard Thompson had previously founded the hugely influential
3) Fairport Convention. In 1972 the band cycled through three different drummers, one of which, Bruce Rowland,  had been playing in
4) The Grease Band, which aside from releasing 2 albums, had played at Woodstock as Joe Cocker's backing band. The Grease Band featured guitarist Henry McCullough who would later be best known as a member of Paul McCartney & Wings, but had previously played in Spooky Tooth as well as
5) Eire Apparent, a british psychedelic rock outfit produced by Jimi Hendrix. Also in Eire Apparent was keyboardist Eric Wrixon, a founding member of the band Thin Lizzy as well as the Belfast-based
6) Them, with Van Morrison.

Grateful Dead - Steely Dan

This week on Six Degrees of Rock & Roll we connected The Grateful Dead to Steely Dan, which took us on a colorful musical journey through bluegrass and country music.

0) Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, had a bluegrass side project called:
1) Old & in the Way featuring bluegrass fiddler Vassar Clements who participated in the 1974 record:
2) Norman Blake, Tut Taylor, Sam Bush, Butch Robins, Vassar Clements, David Holland, Jethro Burns. Mandolin player and singer Sam Bush would soon form:
3) The New Grass Revival with banjo player Bela Fleck and guitarist Tim Goodman, who ten years later would join the country band:
4) Southern Pacific, which featured Keith Knudsen, John McFee and Jerry Scheff who had all played in:
5) The Doobie Brothers. In 1974 guitarist Jeff "Skunk"Baxter joined the Doobie Brothers after leaving:
6) Steely Dan, which he had helped form in 1972.

Little Feat -- Eagles

This week on Six Degrees of Rock & Roll, We embarked on a musical journey that started with Little Feat, one of my favorite LA rock bands and ended with the Eagles. Here was the run-down:

0) Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward had previously been in the band:
1) Fraternity of Man, who recorded "Don't Bogart Me"for the movie Easy Rider. Elliot Ingber was in the band after spending time with Frank Zappa in his band:
2) Mothers of Invention with well-known and widely used bassist Jim Fielder. Included in Fielder's extensive resume is a stint with the pop group:
3) The Association which featured banjo player and harmony singer Larry Ramos. Ramos had joined the Association after a tenure with:
4) The New Christy Minstrels which was a starting point for many famous careers including Kim Carnes, Barry McGuire, Kenny Rogers and Gene Clark, who after stardom as a founding member of the Byrds, would collaborate with Doug Dillard (fresh from the Dillards) to form:
5) Dillard & Clark which featured Bernie Leadon, a good friend of Doug's that provided harmonies and a vast array of instrumentation on their debut album. Leadon would go on to fame with the Flying Burrito Brothers and eventually as a founding member of:
6) The Eagles
